Statutory redundancy pay is half a week's pay for each full year worked under age 22, one week's pay for each full year aged 22 to 40, and one and a half weeks' pay for each full year aged 41 or over, counting back up to 20 years. The employee needs 2 years' service. For redundancies on or after 6 April 2026 weekly pay is capped at £751, so the most anyone can get is £22,530.

Statutory redundancy pay
How it works
1. Check eligibility. Employees normally qualify after 2 years' continuous service with the employer.
2. Count back the full years of service from the date the job ends, up to 20 years. For each year, the multiplier depends on the employee's age during that year: ½ week under 22, 1 week from 22 to 40, 1½ weeks from 41.
3. Multiply the total weeks by a week's pay, capped at £751 for redundancies on or after 6 April 2026.
Worked example. An employee aged 45 with 10 full years' service earns £800 a week. Counting back, the 4 most recent years were at age 41 or over (4 × 1.5 = 6 weeks) and the 6 before that at 22 to 40 (6 weeks): 12 weeks. Their pay is above the cap, so 12 × £751 = £9,012.
